Why is my dog foaming at dog parks?
June 27th, 2009 Posted by: admin
I have taken my dog to the dog park 3 times. The last few times her mouth has gotten a foamy substance around her lips. This never happens at home or when I run her around the back yard or walk her in the nieghborhood.
Could she be hot and dehydrated?
Could she be excited and happy cause she’s around other dogs?
Is there something wrong that I should be worried about?

Probably a bit excited or a little stressed. I’ve seen lots of dogs at the dog park who salavate excessively while there. Usually because they are excited an hyped up.

This happens when they are overly excited or anxious and stressed. I would offer her cold water, but in that state, she may not drink or may drink too fast.
I wouldn’t be too worried about it, but you may want to pace her activity. My golden does this when she is really excited to see another dog or a person.

Its most likely because she’s excited to be there. When dogs are overly excited the can work themselves up so much that they start to foam.

This is nothing to worry about. Dogs don’t have sweat glands like humans do. They either sweat out their feet or their mouth, usually by panting. If a dog doesn’t pant all the time, they will produce a foam at the mouth. This is perfectly normal, just like a dog sweating.

Well it my just be that your dog is excited and hipped up to run or something like that or he/her has rabis.

I don’t know but I **** dog parks. All those dogs running around, you don’t know if they’ve had their shots or if they are aggressive or what kind of filth they may live in. UGH…It only takes a second for a dog fight to break out and then you have trouble.

~ excitement and stress. Our peke comes home looking like her front end was bathed. We don’t take her anymore (shes 12 now) and the stress is un needed. She only did it at the dog park or at the vets around the other dogs.

Dogs tend to drool and foam at the mouth excessively when they are nervous, stressed, or uneasy about something. Could be your dog is nervous being around so many other dogs and feels intimidated by them.

Mine only foams at the park. He gets so excited he can’t help himself.
I remember once being there and he was all foam! This uppity couple loudly whispered..don’t let Chauncy place with him…I think he bee struck with the rabies.
So what did I do…I encourage my dog to play with theirs. The look on their face was priceless. I laughed and said, he only has a little bit of rabies. I’m sure your dog only has a 49% of getting it. They were not amused. Everyone else was.
Just bring a small hand towel with you and wipe his mouth when it gets bad.
