I am thinking about getting a dog, and I want a Guard Dog or Explosive/Drug Sniffing dog. But I also want a playful dog. Would a Labrador Retriever be a good dog for me if I train it?

– What dogs are good for that kind of stuff, but they are also easy to train and fun to play with.

I am currently reading ‘Manstopper! Training a Canine Guardian’ by Joel McMains. It’s an excellent, easy to follow book because he includes stories of dogs he remembers training.
Of course, I’m only 14, so it’s not like I will actually be training a guard dog, but I plan to in the future, and I think it’d be a great idea to start reading as much as possible now.

Back in the 70’s it was a popular breed of dog. Now it’s the pit bull that’s a popular guard dog. Anyone seen a doberman recently?

I was planning on getting a staffy but my family that I moved in with just bought a siamese cat. I figure a staffy wouldnt be a great choice with a cat around.
So my question is what dog breed with guard dog abiliites(something that gives a warning bark and a little territorial)would get along with a kitten?
note: I live in Chile
I plan on getting a puppy and the kitten is 5 months.

Yesterday we were notified that the home we rent (our lease is now month to month) is for sale and in two days we need to allow access to the listing agent to show the home to prospective buyers. This concerns us greatly due to our guard dog and a member of our house has an impaired immune system. We feel that allowing people that could have potential illness (it is flu season) in the house puts this family member at risk. We are willing to move within 30 days, especially to avoid the potential risks to health and the safety of our pets. We live in an area where predation is a huge risk. You don’t let your cats or dogs out because they may not come back. Do we have the option to allow access without proper notice if proper notice is even required?

I want a breed of dog that will fit my lifestyle! I am not very active maybe a walk for 20-30 mins a day! I have a 2 year old daughter and want another one! So good with young children is a must! Also i have 2 small dogs! 14 lbs and 8 lbs(They are both mutts)! I live in a 3 bedroom house on a 10 acre farm, 1 acre fenced in back yard! I want a dog that will love EVERYONE! I DO NOT want a dog that is protective! I don’t need a guard dog just a loving companion! So ummmm, oh i love taking my dogs to the dog park! So a very loving dog towards all people children and animals! Oh size doesn’t really matter but i’d prefer a small or medium sized dog! I have my eye on two particular breeds, but I don’t know if their right for me! I like the Shiba Inu and the King Charles Spaniel! Oh, the basset hound is cute too, but how large do they grow(weight wise)?

I just bought a 3yr old German Shepherd and he is a shy dog. He is afraid of everything. Can I still trained him to become a guard dog?

Can anyone tell me a good dog for a medium sized apartment? I’d like a Beagle or a Basset Hound but I don’t know if she’d howl/bark too much.
I really don’t want any toy dogs like Chihuahuas or Poodles. I don’t need it to be a guard dog or to do anything special. Low energy preferred. If someone could comment on how Beagles/Bassets are noise wise that would be much appreciated.

I would like to get a dog for protection and companionship as my husband frequently travels. I have 3 children ages 8, 5, and 18 mos. I prefer a dog that does not shed drastically as my oldest sometimes has allergic reactions to dogs with lots of hair. We have a very large home and a medium backyard. I am able to invest time exercising, grooming, and training if necessary. Please help me with your recommendations of an intelligent, family friendly guard dog, that would be an excellent deterrent to intruders.
